2021-22 Paper & Yupo

  • In this group of works, Carter experiments with the distinct possibilities offered by Yupo, a synthetic surface that holds paint differently from traditional paper. Rather than absorbing pigment, Yupo keeps it on the surface, allowing color to remain luminous and fluid.

Working with acrylic, spray paint, and mixed media, Carter takes advantage of the material’s slick, reflective qualities. Layers of sprayed and brushed color create an atmosphere that feels light, quick, and almost translucent. While many of the colors appear playful and bright, they are often balanced by darker tones that bring gravity to the composition—a dynamic that runs throughout Carter’s work. The series ultimately becomes an exploration of lightness and depth, where material experimentation opens new possibilities within her abstract language.
