Collage

2016-17

  • Collage has appeared periodically throughout Carter’s practice, offering an alternative way to approach the same compositional instincts that guide her paintings. In these works, color, shape, and movement are constructed through the physical layering of materials rather than through brushwork alone.

Pieces are assembled with the same sensitivity to balance, gesture, and spatial rhythm that defines her paintings. At the same time, collage introduces a new tactile dimension: surfaces rise slightly from the page, creating depth and relief that shifts as the viewer moves. For Carter, collage is less a departure than a parallel path—an opportunity to build compositions through touch, structure, and material presence while remaining rooted in the same painterly sensibility.
