Created alongside the Surface series, Commotion continues Carter’s exploration of paper as a primary surface, but introduces a new sense of movement and material interaction. These works incorporate graphite along with paint, creating a layered dialogue between mediums.

The title reflects the dynamic energy within the compositions. Different materials meet, overlap, and resist one another—much like oil and water—before they begin to coexist. That friction produces the visual rhythm of the works: gestures that feel quick, active, and alive.

While the underlying process remains connected to Surface, Commotion leans further into action and spontaneity. The result is a small but energetic body of work that captures the moment when materials collide, and something unexpected begins to form.
