Grounded 60

2012-14

  • Grounded 60 marks a shift in both subject and process. After years of working through slow, layered surfaces by painting, sanding, waiting, and painting again, Carter wanted to move differently. The waiting gave way to motion. The body wanted to stay in it. The paintings needed speed, mess, and momentum.

The series draws from Carter’s experience of growing up in the 1960s, not in a literal sense but emotionally. The work is busy, layered, and expressive, mirroring the chaos, color, and cultural intensity of that era. Paint is flung, dragged, and pushed across the surface in a way that feels physical, even performative.

Grounded 60 isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about energy. The work holds the wildness of memory, the noise of a time period, and the desire to meet it with the body fully engaged: painting as movement, as rhythm, as lived experience.
